Rockhounding—Wonder Wedneday

It's WONDER Wednesday!

This week's WONDER is rockhounding. Up north, it's a windy, moody day which means the lake is bound to churn up some real treasures over the next few days. Here are some rockhounding DOs that apply in Michigan and many other states with similar guidelines.

  • Look for fossils (like Petoskey and Charlevoix stones) on the beaches of the Lower Peninsula

  • Look for agates and copper-associated minerals in the UP

  • Use the Ordinary High Water Mark as set by the Army Corps of Engineers. You're free to collect a few vertical feet below the current water level, including soil, sand, and rocks in Lake Michigan and Michigan rivers.

  • Observe the 25-pound limit per person per year. You know who you are!!!
